CAPE TOWN-A pair of learners are looking forward to making their school proud on the rugby field in their Western Province colours.
Abdul-Khaaliq Benjamin and Seth Jantjies are both Grade 6 learners and attend Zwaanswyk Academy in Retreat.
The pair were told that they qualified for this year’s u-12 Western Province rugby team on Wednesday 3 September, said school spokesperson Wesley Moolman.
The school announced on their social media that their selection was a highlight for them and the greater Zwaanswyk community.
“Jantjies and Khaaliq Benjamin both play in our u-13A team and have had magnificent seasons,” said Moolman.
People’s Post spoke with the young rugby stars about their passion for the beloved sport.
Jantjies says he was raised in Steenberg and that his love for rugby runs in the family.
“My dad, uncles and cousins all played rugby. My hobbies are that I like to eat a lot, play games as well as rugby and hang out with my friends.”
He recalls he was four years old when his passion for the sport was ignited.
“I hope to play for a club too one day. My favourite position is eighth man.”
He says his proudest achievement was to see his team win their qualification to the Western Province side.
“I was nervous but when I saw my name, I was so excited because I was starting a new chapter in my life. I will always put my family first because they pushed me to where I am today,” he explains.
Jantjies hopes to represent the Springboks and compete in the Rugby World Cup one day.
Their rugby coach, Curtley Februarie, applauds the pair’s efforts in training and hard work.
Benjamin says he was born in Cape Town and enjoys playing cricket and rugby.
“I was seven years old when I discovered my passion for the sport. I also play for two clubs, SSDP and Primroses,” he tells People’s Post.
He currently plays hooker but his favourite position is eighth man.
He has also played in the North South rugby tournament but says his proudest achievement was being in the WP squad.
“When I heard I won I felt very happy like I wanted to cry. My future goals are to be a Springbok one day.”
“We are exceptionally proud of our boys. The effort they have shown throughout the season and their commitment to the game is truly inspiring. Their selection for WP u-12 rugby is a testament to their hard work, discipline, and passion. We can’t wait to see them continue to grow and shine both on and off the field.”
School principal Anthony Adams says he is overjoyed at the young rugby stars achievements and wishes them all the best. “We are exceedingly proud that we have not one, but two, boys making the u-12 WP rugby team this year. This speaks of talent being transformed by hard work and commitment, to ultimate achievement. It is ironic that the last boy to achieve this feat at Zwaanswyk Academy is Curtley Februarie, their current coach and motivator,” he says.
