In an inspiring blend of spiritual growth and physical activity, members of the Christ-Centred Youth (CCY) group set out on a scenic hike through Newlands Forest on Saturday 3 May. The initiative aimed to foster meaningful relationships among the youth while reinforcing their shared Christian values and collective spiritual journey.
Over 20 young people gathered for a day of reflection, fellowship, and fun.The event was spearheaded by youth leader and visionary, Bongani Tyali, whose mission is to guide young people toward a deeper connection with God and self-development through community-building experiences outside traditional church settings.

“This hike wasn’t just about fitness or fresh air,” Tyali explained. “It was about taking intentional steps toward one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, and most importantly, taking steps with God at the centre of it all.”

CCY spokesperson Qaqamba Falithenjwa emphasised the importance of creating safe and spiritually enriching spaces for young people to engage with one another. “We often talk about meeting youth where they are,” she said. “Today, they were in nature—laughing, praying, learning, and sharing their hearts. This is discipleship in motion.”

The hike included designated stops for group prayer, scripture reading, and short discussions led by peer mentors.

Themes of unity, purpose, and perseverance were central to the day’s message, echoing both the physical climb and the metaphorical journey of faith.

While the atmosphere remained light and joyful, the event was also a response to deeper social challenges facing youth in the city. Organizers hope that such gatherings can provide a positive alternative to the distractions and pressures that often pull young people away from their values.

Amahle Maciko, the CCY member, showed appreciation for the experience, with many describing it as “refreshing,” “powerful,” and “needed.” For some, it was their first time hiking; for others, it was a return to nature that reminded them of God’s presence in creation.

Looking ahead, the Christ-Centred Youth team plans to host similar events throughout the year, combining physical activity, community outreach, and faith development. “We’re planting seeds,” said Tyali. “And with God’s help, they’ll grow into something beautiful.”
