  • The Naruna Estate Residents Association will host a yard sale to raise funds for their community outreach initiative in Plumstead.
  • The proceeds will help provide meals to 150 people struggling with social hardships.
  • The event promises low-cost items, with all proceeds going towards continuing the feeding programme.

In an effort to support their growing community outreach, the Naruna Estate Residents Association will be hosting a yard sale on Saturday 5 October in a driveway in Comb Road, Plumstead.

The event, which promises bargains on a wide array of items, is aimed at raising funds to continue feeding those facing social hardships in the community.

Beverly Strong, (63) a foster parent to her two grandchildren, started the association with a simple yet profound act of kindness, feeding an elderly couple every Sunday. What began as a small gesture quickly grew into a passion for helping those in need. Today, Strong and her team feed 150 people twice a week, providing meals to those who are struggling due to social ills.

Speaking to People’s Post, Strong shared the challenges they face in sustaining their efforts. “We don’t have any sponsors,” she said. “So, we rely on the generosity of our neighbours and the community. It’s tough, but we make it work because we believe in what we’re doing.”

Increasing demand

The lack of sponsorship has made it difficult for the association to keep up with the increasing demand for their services, but Strong remains undeterred.

The upcoming yard sale is one way the association hopes to raise much-needed funds. Items such as clothes, kitchenware, and household goods will be sold at low prices from Beverly’s driveway. “Everybody can help somebody,” Strong remarked. “That blouse you’re not wearing, that kettle, that pot – we can sell and could make a huge difference to someone else.”

Strong also extended a heartfelt invitation to the community, urging people to come out and support the cause. “Pop in on the day and see why we do what we do,” she said. The yard sale not only offers an opportunity to find a bargain but also a chance to make a tangible impact on the lives of those in need.

The event is set to start at 09:00. All are welcome, and donations of goods for the sale are still being accepted.
