In a bold step to improve safety, the Wynberg police crime operation targeted drug outlets and shebeens in Westlake and Kirstenhof, confiscating illegal items and boosting visible policing.

Police launch high-impact operation

Wynberg police hit the streets in Westlake and Kirstenhof, aiming to curb criminal activity. Brig Phindiwe Ntungele, Sub-district Commander of Wynberg, led 11 station commanders and neighbourhood-watch patrollers during the operation.

Officers stopped and searched vehicles, seizing drugs, dangerous weapons, and liquor. “Operations such as this show the power of collaboration between the police and the community,” Ntungele said. “We want residents to feel safer and send a clear message that crime will not be tolerated.”

Strategy to disrupt criminal networks

The operation forms part of Wynberg police’s renewed strategy to disrupt criminal networks and increase visible policing. Ntungele stressed that joint operations play a key role in targeting illegal activity and deterring crime.

Residents welcome police presence

Residents expressed relief at the stronger police visibility. A member of the Westlake Neighbourhood Watch said: “For too long our streets have been overrun by illegal activity. Seeing police actively taking action gives us confidence that change is coming.”

Local shop owners echoed the sentiment, saying the operation brought relief after months of theft, vandalism, and public disturbances.

Confiscated items processed; arrests expected

Police will process the seized drugs, weapons, and liquor as evidence. Ntungele confirmed further arrests are likely as investigations continue. Officers said the success of Wednesday’s operation could lead to more joint crime-fighting initiatives soon.

Community cooperation is crucial

Ntungele urged residents to report suspicious activity and remain engaged. “We cannot fight crime alone. Residents’ cooperation is vital in making Westlake and Kirstenhof safer for everyone,” he said.

The operation highlights the importance of visible policing and strong collaboration between the police and local neighbourhood-watch groups. Both law enforcement and residents hope that consistent interventions will gradually reduce crime and strengthen community trust.
