Muizenberg – Wonderbag joined forces with Oryx Desert Salt, Secret Sunrise, and the Ukama Foundation to host a vibrant Mandela Day event at Tiger’s Milk in Muizenberg. The gathering blended community action, conscious movement, and slow-cooked nourishment in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
The beachfront event kicked off with volunteers making sandwiches for local children. Soon after, guests joined a joyful Secret Sunrise silent-disco movement session, designed to encourage mindfulness and connection.
To warm up the morning, Wonderbag served butternut squash soup – one of Mandela’s favourite dishes – cooked using its signature non-electric slow cookers and seasoned with Oryx Desert Salt.
“Mandela Day is about showing up with purpose,” said Tadala Lwanda from Wonderbag. “Through small acts, we build a better society.”
The event also featured a raffle, with all proceeds going to the Ukama Foundation. In a move to support long-term community nutrition, Wonderbag donated several of its eco-friendly bags to Ukama’s kitchen.
Founded in 2008 by South African entrepreneur and social activist Sarah Collins, Wonderbag has grown into one of Africa’s leading carbon offset initiatives. The product allows food to cook without electricity for hours, reducing energy use and improving safety in homes.
As one of the fastest-growing carbon projects on the continent, Wonderbag continues to transform lives and kitchens across the globe.
This Mandela Day, the Muizenberg event proved that even simple acts , like sharing soup, dancing, or preparing meals , can contribute to lasting change.
