The Newlands community will host the 11th Annual Silent Walk this Saturday, 6 August. This special event promotes Deaf awareness, inclusion, and community unity. DeafSA Newlands organizes the walk, giving participants a chance to experience life from a deaf perspective while supporting an important cause.
The Silent Walk began over a decade ago as a small volunteer gathering. Since then, it has grown into a major annual event that highlights the challenges and achievements of the Deaf community. “The walk is more than just an event, it represents hope and unity,” said Jabaar Mohamed, event coordinator.
The walk welcomes participants of all ages. Each attendee pays a R50 registration fee, which covers earplugs for a fully immersive silent experience. Additionally, each participant receives a raffle ticket for exciting prizes, including hotel vouchers, shark-cage diving, food vouchers, Red Bus trips, and aquarium visits. “The raffle adds fun while keeping the focus on our cause,” Mohamed added.
For Mohamed, hosting the Silent Walk has deep personal meaning. “As a Deaf person, this event showcases the strength of the Deaf community. It breaks down communication barriers and inspires young Deaf people to know they are not alone,” he explained.
Registration is open online at https://forms.gle/LxCC58N2paQUcd1D9 and closes today at 2 pm. The walk promises a family-friendly, reflective, and inclusive experience. Moreover, it helps participants become more aware, connected, and committed to Deaf inclusion in South Africa.
