A woman, 33, from Wynberg is appearing in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court today after being arrested in the hit-and-run which caused the death of Olivia Sieff in the early hours of Sunday morning outside Tin Roof in Claremont.

Lieutenant Colonel Marnus Fourie, Vispol Head of Claremont Police Station, said officers responded to a complaint when they found the 18-year-old model dead at the scene on Main Road.

The driver of the car that collided with the victim was not on site.

The police’s collision unit responded and a case of culpable homicide and leaving the scene of an accident was opened.

Fourie said local CCTV footage was obtained, “The car that was involved was identified and on Tuesday 1 February the vehicle was traced. The driver was arrested and detained at Claremont Police Station as a suspect. The arrest was made in a joint co-operation between Claremont detectives and City of Cape Town Law Enforcement members.”

According to Fourie, the vehicle that was allegedly used in the incident was seized and forensic analysis was done on the vehicle.

On Thursday 3 February, the suspect was charged for culpable homicide and leaving the scene of an accident without ascertaining injuries or damage (hit and run).

“As Claremont police, we would like to send our condolences to the local Claremont family. We are aware that the family is going through a grieving process and request that they are afforded the privacy and opportunity to come to terms with the tragic loss of a loved one. The loss of any person prematurely and under these circumstances are tragic. We have offered to counsel to the victim’s family and we have stayed in contact throughout the investigation with the family spokesperson, keeping them updated,” says Fourie.

He urges all persons to remain vigilant at all times whenever crossing a busy road.

“Especially in and around the CBD and nightclubs. The unfortunate culmination of several factors led to the untimely end to a young life,” says Fourie.
