“The whole idea behind starting this football team was to uplift women’s sports,” says Mark Nicholson, a director from the Lavender Hill Sports and Recreation Foundation.
The Lavender Hill Ladies football club was established in 2021.
“We currently have about 24 ladies, the youngest is 10-years-old and the oldest is currently 53. We want to encourage them to be the best that they can be, we want to motivate them so that they can motivate other females as well.”
However since the inception of the ladies football team, players have been sharing soccer kits with the men’s football team in Lavender Hill. “They do not have soccer boots or tracksuits,” says Nicholson.
“Each player needs a pair of soccer boots.”
He adds when the team plays away games they borrow from the men’s soccer team.
“The ladies are playing away games every consecutive weekend. We need training equipment, especially for football like mini hurdles, cones and bibs and most importantly we need to have our league affiliation fee to South African Football Association Cape Town covered which is R4 600, so that we can play structured football.” adds Nicholson.

Meanwhile, non-governmental organisation (NGO) Rise Above Development (RAD) has opened its doors to Lavender Hill Football Club’s (LHFC) u-8s and u-10s to train in a safe space every Wednesday.
LHFC was established five years ago by RADs Hilton Ludick, Mark Nicholson and fellow LHFC Director Rubin Bruintjies.
Over 400 registered players over various age groups receive training, nurturing and support keeping them away from drug addiction and gang recruitment.
