Water test after sewage spill

Recreational users who make use of the waterways in Marina Da Gama have been cautioned after a sewage spill.

Kyran Wright, Reserve Manager at Zandvlei Nature Reserve, cautioned recreational users after the minor sewage spill was detected on Monday 11 April.

“Please note that a sewage spill was detected 11 April to be flowing into Marina Da Gama waterways in the Baalen Way channel. While the output flow rate and volume was relatively minor, the spill did persist until this morning.”

Wright said although the spill had ceased and the blockage had been rectified there was a risk to recreational users in the direct vicinity of the Marina Da Gama waterways.

“Please would users exercise caution when utilising the northern canals in the Marina?”

Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for water and sanitation, said a blockage to the sewer pipeline was mainly caused by material and fats.

“The City’s water and sanitation team cleared a blockage that reoccurred in the sewer pipeline three times between Monday 11 April and Tuesday 12 April. The blockage, caused mainly by material and fats, unfortunately caused an overflow into a point at the Marina. The water pollution control unit took a sample from the Marina and is now waiting for the results.”
