While police have obtained the video footage of an accident that claimed the life of Meshaye Wichman, they say no arrests have yet been made.
Grassy Park Police Station spokesperson Capt Wyenita Kleinsmith says the accident is still under investigation. The horrific accident happened in Grassy Park on Saturday 26 March.
“There is video footage, however, it is still under investigation and cannot be released. To date no arrests have been made.”
Last week, police confirmed that the driver of a gold Toyota fled the scene of the accident.
“A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened on Saturday 26 March after an accident occurred on 5th Avenue and Lake Road, Grassy Park and the charge changed to culpable homicide after a female that was in the minibus, succumb due to her injuries sustained during the crash. The driver of the vehicle, a gold in colour Toyota fled the scene after the accident.”
Quanita Wichman, the victim’s sister, made a public plea asking witnesses to come forward with information. “Please if anyone has information about the accident that happened on the corner of 5th Ave and Lake Road, Grassy Park please come forward.”
In a Facebook post Fadia Ismail said the family has hit a brick wall as witnesses do not want to come forward. “Please people, the grieving family is in great need of everyone’s help. They are hitting brick walls here. It sounds like they not going to get justice for their beloved sister Meshaye Wichman.
“We want justice for Meshaye Wichman untimely horrid death. I beg you all please help this family. They can’t even mourn their sister’s death, because they are now worried this case is going to be swept under the rug. Please all the witnesses come forward if you really want to help this grieving family.”
Ismail added without the community’s help the alleged perpetrator would not be found.
“Just put yourself in their shoes. Wouldn’t you want justice? To have peace of mind? To let your deceased loved one rest in peace? Everyone says she must rest in peace, then let’s get that culprit jailed for life. Do not let them sweep this case under the rug. Please come forward contact the family and arrange to meet and go together to give your statements at police station.”
Natalie Michelle Kandon wrote that she couldn’t understand why it was hard to find someone who left his/ her car behind at the scene of an accident.
“The culprit left his car behind on the scene, there is video footage that shows what happened.”
