The slashing of tyres and damage to police vehicles is affecting service delivery to communities.

In two separate incidents this month, vandals slashed the tyres of Muizenberg police vehicles in Vrygrond.

And last month the Grassy Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) called on the community to come forward after the tyre of one of their patrol vehicles was slashed in Ottery (Police tyre slashed in Ottery”, People’s Post 16 April).

Last week, Muizenberg police spokesperson Stephen Knapp confirmed that two police vehicles were affected in separate attacks this month.

He said:

“On two separate instances, Muizenberg police patrol vehicles have come under attack and been damaged,” he said. “On Wednesday 8 May, at approximately 22:30, officers were on foot-patrol in Philemon Road, Vrygrond when three tyres were slashed.”

In the second incident on Saturday 11 May, officers were conducting stop and search operations at 21:10 when another tyre was slashed.

‘Attack on state’

Muizenberg police station commander Col Jacqui Johnson expressed her dismay at the attack and damage of state vehicles.

“These officers are delivering a service to the Vrygrond community and such attacks not only affect the service delivery but hampers the overall ability to provide a service to the greater Muizenberg precinct,” she said.

Meanwhile, last month, Grassy Park CPF deputy chair Nicole Jacobus called the vandalism to police vehicles an attack on the State.

“Our police need to be ready to respond to calls and the flattening of police vehicle tyres is tantamount to obstructing police in doing their duty,”

“Our police need to be ready to respond to calls and the flattening of police vehicle tyres is tantamount to obstructing police in doing their duty,” she said. “We are all concerned about the high level of crime and our community.

“Leaders are requested to speak about this in their various institutions.”

She added that vandalising of State property is very concerning.

“We call on the community to say something when they see somebody vandalising property.”
