The cold and wet winter days are here and Neighbourhood Old Age Homes’ (NOAH) Pothier House is in desperate need of upgrades.
Pothier House, a Victorian-style property based in Woodstock, is home to 10 residents.
Nicky Jacobs, sustainability leader at NOAH, explained that while they have received some funding for the renovation the roof also needs to be restored due to extensive damp and damage.
“This architectural beauty is facing a challenge that threatens its structural integrity and the well-being of its inhabitants. Once the roof is repaired, we will need to replace two sash windows, as well as carry out electrical repairs and paint.”
According to Jacobs, the estimated budget is about R220 000. “The pervasive damp has left its mark necessitating comprehensive damp proofing. The ‘stoep’, a cozy outdoor refuge, must be renewed, and the jo-jo water tank awaits removal.
“The courtyard, a communal canvas, will see its surface transformed to guide the rainwater away, safeguarding the house’s foundation. The walls inside and out are prepared for a fresh coat of paint, to breathe new life into Pothier House.”
Jacobs said repairs will take some time to complete. “As winter’s chill approaches, we extend a heartfelt appeal to you, our community. Your support can help us make Pothier House water-tight and preserve its allure for generations to come. We also seek your generosity in providing meals for our 10 residents during their temporary relocation, ensuring they have a warm plate as they await their return to their beloved home.”
She appealed to people to support them. “Join us in this noble cause. Your contributions, no matter the size, will be a beacon of hope for Pothier House and its residents. Together let’s restore the charm and dignity of this Victorian treasure.”
