Sue Vorster from Wetton, founder of Caring Unicorns, with some of the people who benefit from her NPO.

A total of 87 families in Wetton and Lansdowne are being fed by Sue Vorster with donations from the local community and other sponsors.

She registered her NPO Caring Unicorns because unicorns are mystical creatures and care about keeping people safe and happy.

“When people walked by my house in Wetton and asked for food, I would gladly oblige by giving the food and also make food parcels on a weekly basis. I was working full-time in 2019 and shared what I had in my cupboard. I could afford to help but then the covid-pandemic hit in 2020 and the numbers escalated,” she says.

“This year I could not make up parcels due to me now being self-employed. I then decided to at least make a hot meal, a loaf of bread and soup for everyone. The community donated when I did not have enough and I decided to register my charity as Caring Unicorns,” she says.

Recently they received half of the food from IFH kitchen in Woodstock and feed around 87 families per week.

“We now have females in our communities from Wetton and Ottery who come to assist with the food preparation and cooking. The Lions Club now also donates rolls, some vegetables and treats, when they are able to. I approached a lot of companies last year for donations as we registered Caring Unicorns as an NPC, but no regular donations are received as yet.

“I also collect brick-a-brack, clothing etc for the needy and also try to assist other non-profit organisations in the area who need what I can assist with. I am also sometimes fortunate enough to receive vegetables from a farm in Philippi and hand it out to the community or anyone who needs it,” she says.
