A couple’s harrowing experience had a very gratifying round-off, when a man and woman appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 March on a charge of carjacking and kidnapping.
This was the result of a concerted effort from Rondebosch and Goodwood police as well as Law Enforcement officers in Wynberg, who turned a near-successful carjacking into arrests, according to Rondebosch police spokesperson WO Lyndon Sisam.
The couple’s ordeal began on Friday the 22nd, around 15:20, when the complainant, the man, was behind the wheel of his white Chevy Spark and on his phone when he pulled up at the spot on the corner of Harrow and Ednam Road, Rondebosch, where his girlfriend was waiting for him.
“Suddenly they were accosted by three suspects on foot, two men and a woman, who forced the girl into the boyfriend’s car, pushed the driver into the back seat and drove away with them,” Sisam related. He said the suspect drove around with the abducted couple until the fuel had run out and they demanded money for petrol.
“But the complainants had no money in their accounts. The suspects then sold the complainants’ cellphones to pay for the petrol.”
One of the suspects alighted at an unknown location while the other suspects drove the vehicle to Monte Vista in Goodwood, where they dropped the victims off around 21:00 and then drove away.
The traumatised couple reported their ordeal at the Goodwood Police Station, where the white Chevy Spark was registered on the system, and police and Law Enforcement were alerted.
“The white Chevy Spark was spotted by Wynberg Law Enforcement, heading towards Diep River at about 23:00. They then stopped the vehicle, arrested two suspects, a male and female, and detained them at the Diep River Police Station.”
They were found in possession of a replica gas firearm, a knife, stolen clothing, and cash. At the time of his arrest the male suspect was out on correctional supervision and had a lengthy criminal record.
They appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on charges of carjacking and kidnapping.
