Two male suspects arrested on Thursday morning 24 August, at
the Cavendish Shopping Centre in Claremont, are now linked to a murder case
after a Zimbabwean national was found dead on Frederick Road.
Lt Col Marius Fourie, the Vispol Commander at Claremont Police
Station, said around 02:25, the Excellerate Security members at the shopping
centre noticed a familiar Zimbabwean walking up Vineyard Road from Blue Whistle
Sports Bar to Frederick Road.
“The members also noted two unknown men following the local
Zimbabwean on Vineyard Road,” Fourie stated.
According to Fourie, the two men returned after 10 minutes,
carrying a jacket that belonged to the Zimbabwean. This prompted the members to
investigate. They also alerted the Claremont Improvement District Corporation
(CIDC) security who called a police van to search the men.
A watch with a broken strap, a silver chain and a cellphone
were found in their possession, explains Fourie.
The duo was arrested as they could not account for the
items.
Following daybreak, Fourie continued, the security from
Vineyard Hotel in Frederick Road noticed a man lying lifeless in front of a
block of flats in Frederick Road.
“The
ambulance was summoned and upon their arrival, it was confirmed that the man
was deceased,” Fourie detailed.
“The suspects remain in custody and are
expected to be charged for possession of the suspected stolen property and to
appear in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday 28 August,” concluded Fourie.
