Ward 59 councillor Mikhail Manuel has embarked on a mission to combine his passion for fitness with his dedication to community service.

Recently, the councillor began participating in triathlons to raise funds and awareness for The Good Start Foundation, a Cape Town-based non profit organisation (NPO) that supports young learners.

Manuel, who has been serving his community as councillor in Claremont for over two years, is tackling triathlons, with each event comprising a 90 km cycling segment, a 21 km run and a challenging swim.

His latest triathlon was a Super Sprint at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands, marking his first-ever event in this demanding sport. “I’ve always enjoyed being active, and what better way to do it than for a good cause?” says Manuel. “Triathlons are always in the public domain, which allows me to uplift my community while pushing myself to new limits.” Manuel has committed to raising R1 000 for every kilometre he completes during his triathlons. His first challenge, a 12,4 km Super Sprint, sets a fund-raising target of R12 400, with Manuel personally donating the first R1 000.

The funds raised will go towards NPO’s two key programmes: a Breakfast Club that provides essential morning meals to learners at Good Hope Seminary Junior School and St Mary’s Primary School, and a Smart Club that helps learners overcome educational barriers such as autism, dyslexia and trauma.

“A lack of nourishment and funding for professional therapy can severely hinder a child’s ability to learn,” says a representative from the NPO. “Councillor Manuel’s efforts are crucial in supporting our mission to invest in the minds of young learners.”

The community has shown support for councillor Manuel’s initiative. His commitment to using his platform for positive change is evident.

“As a councillor, I’m always seeking ways to make a meaningful impact. This is a unique opportunity to combine my love for fitness with serving my community,” Manuel adds.

With more triathlons on the horizon, Manuel continues to inspire others by demonstrating the power of merging personal interests with community service.
