In celebration of Arbor Month, marked from 1 to 30 September, the Friends of Muizenberg Park planted five olive trees at a ceremony in Muizenberg Park on Thursday 12 September.

Friends of Muizenberg Park chair Nicci Giles said good partnerships with the City and community made the event possible.

“We are very passionate about green spaces in communities,” she said. “Because of the relationships built, and going through the restoration process of the park, the City donated these five beautiful olive trees that will be here for years to come, and we are very excited about that.

”Friends of Muizenberg Park, in collaboration with Muizenberg Improvement District (MID), the City and community members, has taken on a restoration project which included restoring the stream and wooden footbridge at the park.

“A neighbour of the park donated and ran an incredible project to restore the stream,” said Giles. “The bridge (above the stream) has been used by the community for 70 years and many people had their wedding photos taken on that bridge, it is looking great.”

She added that their aim has always been to protect the park. “The Friends of Muizenberg Park has been going since 2013, and our vision has always been to protect the boundaries of the park so that it is a green lung for people to enjoy.”

Asanda Mdladlamba from the City’s Recreation and Parks Department said they were happy to be part of the ceremony.

“It is Arbor Month celebrations, she said, “so today we are planting in Muizenberg Park. “I know these trees will be well taken care of by the community because they are actively involved in the park.”
