The top Western Cape schools and learners was awarded for their academic excellence during the annual National Senior Certificate (NSC) award ceremony held recently.
Zonnebloem Nest Senior School was awarded as one of the schools with the highest increase in the percentage of bachelor’s passes.
This category recognises 10 schools with 30 or more candidates that have shown the greatest increase in the percentage of candidates achieving bachelor’s passes over the period 2021-’23.
The criteria also include consistency in the number of Grade 12 candidates over the same period.
Heather Calmeyer, principal at Zonnebloem Nest Senior School, said: “The class of 2023 were amazing and exceeded expectation. They performed fantastically well just in their overall pass rate which was 92.3% which is much better than previous years.”
The principal says the teachers, learners and parents all worked equally hard .
Herzlia High School in Vredehoek placed third in the top four schools with an NSC enrolment of less than 80 candidates.
The school also boasts the top learner from an independent school in the Western Cape. The learner, Ethan Myers, was also in joint second place provincially.
While Ashlee Drew was named one of the top 40 learners in the province, according to candidates’ marks obtained in their best six subjects that fulfil the requirements for the award of a National Senior Certificate. This includes two languages, mathematics and three other subjects, excluding life orientation. The historical context of schools is also taken into consideration.
Commenting on the school’s outstanding performance, principal Shane Brorson, said: “Kudos must be given to the teachers who have supported our matric pupils on their academic journey. Their commitment and always going the extra mile have been instrumental in their success. Herzlia is an academically inclusive school which makes our matric results even more impressive.”
Brorson said the school has “five, interwoven pillars” which he believes prepares learners for the world.
“A world needs bold and bright thinkers, dreamers and doers with a strong moral compass and the determination to make things better. This is how we ensure they go out into the world as well-rounded, empowered and inspired individuals.”
He said they are proud of the class of 2023.
“At Herzlia every learner matters. It’s our responsibility to make sure they’re not just seen, but known for who they truly are and want to be. It’s our responsibility to understand them. To believe in them. To add value to their lives. To ensure every child gets the tools and support they need to overcome every obstacle and achieve their greatest potential.”
