Three suspects were arrested during a “significant” abalone bust in Rondebosch earlier today (Thursday 1 December).
The arrest followed a tip-off to the City of Cape Town’s dedicated informant rewards line.
According to JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, the information was relayed to Law Enforcement’s Marine and Environmental Unit who alerted police and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment.
“Upon arrival, officers found a large quantity of abalone and equipment used to dry the marine resources. The abalone is still being counted and weighed – confirmed totals will be released once available,” says Smith.
Investigators were still on the scene by 15:00 today.
Smith says at least three suspects were detained in connection with the find.
“The continuous stripping of our marine resources is of serious concern, and it is my sincere hope that those involved in this case are swiftly prosecuted, to the full extent of the law so that it may serve as a warning to others,” he says.
