More than 60 000 people gathered at the Grand Parade and along Adderley Street in Cape Town on Sunday 27 November for the Festive Lights switch-on event.
The free event made a return following a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
For the first time, the event was powered by renewable energy, thanks to the green credits banked by the City of Cape Town by way of the Darling Wind Farm, with whom the city has a partnership.
This year’s theme ‘Cape Town – City of Hope’ celebrates Capetonians’ resilience, and how, as a united force challenges can be overcome.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says he felt nostalgic.
“I remember as a young boy coming to this event with my mom to see them switch on these lights. I am now switching it on myself and seeing all these kids here they will see it just like I saw it.”
Hill-Lewis cautioned Capetonians to stay safe this holiday season.
“We have a beautiful city, but it can also be dangerous. We want people to listen to our officers please stay safe on our beaches, don’t drink and drive. Spend time with your loved ones and stay safe.”
The mayor says safety plans have been put in place to ensure everyone’s safety.
“We will have 4 000 officers on duty this festive season. On all of our beaches, you will see our quad bikes, horses, helicopters and boats. Our teams will make sure our kids don’t lose their parents by doing the Identikidz bands on beaches. And our new high-way patrol unit will be out on the roads.”
Alicia Martinus, from Hout Bay, says: “We are so happy that we can attend this show. The last time we attended was in 2019. The vibe is fantastic.”
The massive crowd was entertained by a host of local artists including 4IAM, Bernice West with Jazzart Dance Theatre Company, Emo Adams, Zakes Bantwini and Mi Casa.
Joao da Fonseca, better known as J Something lead singer for Mi Casa, shared a special message with Capetonians for the festive season.
“May we shower each other with happiness, love and may we be peaceful with one another. May we have fun and celebrate and may those who have been working hard the whole year take some time off. For those of us who will be working, may we work with everything that we have.”
