A Portlands’ couple’s world has come crashing down with the untimely death of their two minor daughters.
On Friday 3 March, tragedy struck the Thomas family when Abduragmaan and their two daughters Nishaat (6) and Nurah (2) were involved in a traffic accident on the corners of Merrydale Avenue and Wespoort Drive.
“It happened at past 16:00. Their dad just picked up our youngest daughter Nurah from crèche. They took this route every day,” says a heartbroken Raihaana.
It is alleged that the car was struck when a taxi jumped a red traffic light.
Nishaat was killed on impact. Little Nurah later passed away at the hospital on Sunday 5 March.
“There are robots at that intersection and I think there should just be more responsible drivers on the roads. They should be patient. I would just like that the guy responsible should rot in jail because he took away from me what I can never get back. I wouldn’t want this to happen to anybody else. So if it’s just one less person like him on the road, I’ll be happy,” she says.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said: “Kindly be advised that the matter you are referring to is still under investigation and there are no new developments to report at this stage.”
Describing her girls, Raihaana says: “They were our life!”
“My daughters were the most loving, caring sweetest most beautiful and innocent kids you could ever have. They were amazing and lovable. Losing them has changed my whole life. My husband’s life. It’s a pain we as parents cannot describe. We lived for our children,” she says.
According to the couple, authorities were unhelpful at the scene.
Both girls have since been laid to rest in accordance with Muslim Burial Rites.
