The draw for the Bayview Youth Cup was held on Monday 16 June at Mondale High School in Mitchells Plain and the 64 teams now know their opponents for the round-robin stages of the tournament, which gets underway on Sunday 29 June at the Strandfontein Sports Field.
The event also marked the club’s 20th anniversary and the 10th edition of the u-16 Youth Cup.
The 64 teams for the Bayview Youth Cup will arrive from Friday 27 June and will be accommodated in the Blue Waters Resort in Strandfontein.
The tournament has been instrumental in unearthing some of the country’s top-flight players.
These include Faiz Abrahams (20), a winger for Stellenbosch FC and Luke Baartman (18), a centre forward for Cape Town Spurs. Both started their soccer careers at Cape Town Spurs under the former coach Shaun Bartlett before Abrahams was signed by Stellenbosch.
They both play for the Amajita, the Safa u-20 team. Great things are expected from them in the future.
Baartman is described as the Wonderkid and has impressed in a few displays during the season. A product of the Youth Academy at Ikamva, he made his Premier Soccer League (PSL) debut in 2023 against Orlando Pirates and scored his first goal in the same year against Kaizer Chiefs.
A great start
Prior to his promotion to the first team of Cape Town Spurs, Baartman had a great start to the DStv Diski Challenge season and scored six goals in his first five matches in the campaign.
Abrahams, who hails from Valhalla Park, made his senior debut for Stellies against Kaizer Chiefs in February and was one of the standout players during the club’s 2024-25 DStv Diski Challenge campaign.
He’s recorded 11 goals and six assists for the season alone.
He was recently part of Amajita that won the CAF u-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and was crowned Stellenbosch FC’s reserve team Footballer of the Season at the club’s annual awards ceremony.
South Africa’s u-20 team will hold camps ahead of the 2025 FIFA u-20 World Cup, which is set to take place in Chile.
Amajita have been drawn in Group E alongside the USA, France, and New Caledonia in the global tournament, which is scheduled for between Saturday 27 September and Sunday 19 October.
