A sinkhole detected on the side of the Sea Point Swimming Pool has necessitated the temporary closure of the facility from tomorrow (17 September.)
The closure is due to critical excavation and repairs to a collapsed main pipe, to ensure the long-term sustainability and safety of the pool.
The city says the site has been deemed unsafe for public use during this time, and health and safety precautions have been implemented, including signage and fencing of restricted areas.
City of Cape Town Mayco member for community services and health Patricia Van der Ross says the reopening date cannot be confirmed.
“No definite date can be communicated at the moment as the extent of the defects can only be identified once excavation has been completed. The projected timeline estimated on the assumption of works is approximately two months.”
Van der Ross said the sinkhole was detected during a routine inspection of the facility.

“The sinkhole was created by a collapsed water line. For a proper assessment of the damage and to determine the exact scope of work required for repairs, the entire water line must be unearthed. At this stage the pool has to be closed due to this critical work.”
Van der Ross said while every effort would be made to minimise unnecessary delays the public would be updated on the progress.
“We apologise to facility users for any inconvenience caused, and we’ll work as speedily as possible to ensure this amenity is up and running soon.”
Ram Barkai, Friends of Sea Point chair, said he hoped the much-needed refurbishments would be concluded before the busy summer season. He said the facility was a popular attraction for both locals and visitors, and added the upkeep of the facility was important.
While the pool was being refurbished bathers could make use of the Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool from Monday to Sunday and on public holidays, from 07:00 to 19:00.
The Long Street pool is reserved for use by women every Tuesday from 10:00 to 14:00 or from 10:00 to 13:00 during school holidays.
If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday full public use will be permitted that day.
