Teen scoops gold in youth champs

Grassy Park teen Nuha Shah (14) walked away with top honours in the 2022 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi last week, becoming the first SA athlete to win gold.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) SA made the announcement on Thursday 18 August.

“Congratulations to our young athlete Nuha Shah who won gold in the Female Youth B 48 kg division. She becomes the first South African athlete to receive a gold medal in the Youth World Championships. “Truly an inspiration for the future of South Africa in the sport of MMA.”

Pelican Park High School praised the teenager for her remarkable achievement on social media.

“Congratulations to Pelican Park High School’s Nuha Shah on becoming the Under 14 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) World Champion.

“The young Pelican is a Grade 8 learner and while she’s excelling in the classroom, she’s gone on to raise the South African flag high by grabbing gold in Abu Dhabi.”

Meanwhile, in a social media post, the teen’s father Ghaalib Shah thanked everyone who was instrumental in Nuha’s MMA journey

“History has been made. Nuha, you are such an inspiration and touched so many people’s hearts. I am beyond proud to be your father.

Shukran to all the sponsors’ help with fundraisers, donations, coaches and Nuha’s training partners. You have all played a major role in Nuha’s trip to Abu Dhabi.

“Nuha is now officially MMA world champion 2022. I appreciate you all for what you have done.”
