Police have cautioned residents who exercise at the Rondebosch Common to be on the alert following a report of a firearm robbery at the urban green space.
Capt John Tayler, station commander at Rondebosch Police Station, requests members of the public who make use of the Common to be vigilant.
Tayler says on Wednesday 31 May at 16:40, a young woman, 16, was taking a walk on the park run which surrounds the Common when she noticed a cycler coming up behind her.
The teenager gave way for him to pass but he stopped and asked for directions to the local post office.
“The complainant was about to answer him when he pulled out a firearm and demanded her cellphone. The suspect grabbed her phone, a Samsung S20, Capitec card and a Sportsmans Warehouse voucher, and kept on cycling,” says Tayler.
He urges members of the public to be aware of their surroundings, cyclists or cars that either slow down or pass them more than once.
“Try to walk in pairs where possible – there is safety in numbers,” says Tayler.
Report any suspicious cyclist or vehicles to your security WhatsApp group or the Rondebosch Police Station on 021 685 6600/1.
