Taxi driver arrested in connection with horror crash which killed Nishaat, 6, and Nurah Thomas, 2

A 22-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the taxi which caused the tragic death of Nishaat and Nurah Thomas in Merrydale Avenue, has been arrested.


A 22-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the taxi which caused the tragic death of Nishaat and Nurah Thomas in Merrydale Avenue, has been arrested. 

The man, who allegedly is unlicensed, is believed to have driven the full taxi that slammed into the Thomas family’s Opel Corsa on Friday 3 March after 16:00. 

Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Sgt Zandi Langa confirms police had visited the scene on Friday 3 March. 

She says: “It is alleged that the Toyota Quantum jumped a red traffic light and collided with the Opel Corsa. A 22-year-old man was arrested at his Kraaifontein home on Saturday 11 March.”

The driver faces charges of culpable homicide. Nishaat (6), was killed on impact, while her little sister, Nurah (2), died at the hospital.

Both sisters have been laid to rest per Muslim rites. 

“There are robots at that intersection and I think there should just be more responsible drivers on the roads. They should be patient. I would just like that the guy responsible should rot in jail because he took away from me what I can never get back. I wouldn’t want this to happen to anybody else. So if it’s just one less person like him on the road, I’ll be happy,” their mom Raihaana said to People’s Post previously. 

The suspect has since made his first court appearance.
