The fire that broke out on the lower slopes of Table Mountain yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon has largely been extinguished.
The fire was fuelled by extreme heat, low humidity and wind-driven embers, which quickly spread toward Devil’s Peak.
This followed the South African Weather Service’s weather advisory for the Western Cape, warning of conditions that could intensify the fire.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, said crews would conduct a recon this morning of the affected area to check for hotspots.
“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service worked closely with the Table Mountain National Park [TMNP] and the Volunteer Wildfire Service to contain this blaze, as has become custom.”
South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a press statement access to trails within Deer Park remains limited due to active hot spots in the area, which are unsafe for public access.
“Please avoid this area for your safety. Our teams are on-site to monitor any flare-ups and conduct mop-up operations,” read the statement.
Carelse reminded residents to take precautions ahead of the warmer months.
“It is a timely reminder to the public of how easily wildfires can start, and as we head into the warmer months we appeal to everyone to do their bit for fire safety, whether vegetation or structural.”
Carelse said a summary of fire-prevention and safety tips is available on the City’s website: www.capetown.gov.za/firesafety
