Table Mountain crime: Four pickpockets disguised as visitors arrested on Signal Hill

On Tuesday (21 May) evening officials from South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the arrest of four individuals linked with pickpocketing on Signal Hillin Table Mountain National Park. 

In a statement SANParks Head of Communications JP Louw confirmed the successful apprehension followed a focused operation carried out by the agency’s Sea, Air and Mountain (SEAM) team.

“This action was prompted by a series of reported pickpocketing incidents in the area involving suspects disguised as park visitors,” he said.

Firm on the Seam Team’s radar these suspected pickpockets were closely monitored for several hours until they attempted to steal a cellphone from one of the park visitors.

“The Seam Team members reacted and all four suspects were apprehended while attempting to flee,” Louw said. “The case has been reported to the South African Police Services at the Cape Town Police Station.

“SANParks urges park visitors to exercise caution while engaging in their wide range of outdoor activities. To ensure your safety and the security of your belongings, it is important to remain vigilant and adhere to these crucial safety guidelines.”

Louw concluded by reminding visitors that safety is their top priority: “We want every visitor to have a memorable and secure experience in Table Mountain National Park. By following these guidelines and remaining alert you can help us ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for all.”

•  Stay aware of your surroundings: While enjoying the stunning views, please be mindful of your surroundings. Pay attention to the people nearby and be cautious of any suspicious activity.

•  Secure your valuables: Do not leave your valuables unattended. Keep your belongings secure on your person at all times, and consider using anti-theft bags or pouches.

•  Report suspicious activity: If you observe any suspicious behaviour or feel uncomfortable, please report it to park rangers or local authorities immediately on 086 110 6417. Your vigilance can help keep the park safe for everyone.

•  Be cautious of individuals offering help or assistance: Pickpockets often work in groups, and distraction is one of their tactics.
