Naruna Estate Residents Association in Plumstead is gearing up for its 5th annual give back initiative, a community-focused event designed to uplift senior citizens and learners.
Set for Saturday 14 December, the event will feature a festive community meal, food parcels for seniors, and essential school supplies for children.
This heartfelt initiative is led by Beverly Strong, a 63-year-old resident with a deep commitment to giving back, inspired by her life challenges.
Reflecting on her journey, Strong shared: “I’ve faced unemployment, financial struggles, and even battled colon cancer. My recovery was a turning point. Despite my hardships, I’ve always tried to help others. Now, I want to make a difference in their lives.”
Since its humble beginnings, the initiative has grown, becoming a reliable support system for the community.
“It started small, but now people depend on me,” Strong says. “Living among them, I see their daily struggles. One small gesture can mean the world to someone.”
To bring this year’s event to life, Strong is calling on the community to donate non-perishable food items and school supplies, particularly stationery, for children in need. “We’re struggling to gather enough back-to-school supplies,” she notes. “Any donation, no matter how small, will bring joy to those in need.”
Maryna Verburg, a beneficiary who once faced eviction and was helped by Strong, expressed gratitude, saying: “Beverly always goes the extra mile whenever we need her, even though she faces her own challenges. Her efforts to gather school items and bags for the kids make her a true angel.”
