A monthly prayer meeting by 20 seniors from Sunnyside, Grassy Park and surrounding areas developed into craft classes where their hidden skills are developed.

During the Covid-19 pandemic most people discovered their hidden talents.

Some people baked, others cooked, sewed, painted, crocheted and knitted, and the seniors at Sunnyside are rekindling these talents again.

“We, known as the Sunflower Ladies, gather at the Church of the Nazarene in Sunnyside and meet once a month. We wanted to do more than just pray and have fellowship and came up with the idea of using our hidden talents to make something useful for others. Some of our members travel from Mitchells Plain and the Strand to attend the meetings,” says Alida Pfeiffer from Plumstead, who initiated the sessions.

In the past month, the members were taught how to paint on a cloth, a first time experience for some.

“The completed items are donated to the needy and currently everything is coming out of our own pockets. Donations from the public or businesses are welcome. We need cotton fabric, beads, wool, embroidery cotton, batting and fabric paint. We are not professionals and if someone in the community would come and present a craft, that would be appreciated. With winter nearly on our doorstep, we invite specialists in beading, knitting, crocheting and fabric painting to offer their services,” Pfeiffer says.
