A shipping container filled with eco-bricks stolen in Lekkerwater Road/Kommetjie Road, Sunnydale was found in Delft last week.
The 500 bricks were inside the container at the Bhongolethu Foundation in Lekkerwater Road.
Additional bricks were to be loaded and transported to False Bay college in Khayelitsha once the container was filled. They were stolen on Sunday 24 July.
According to Candice Mostert, director at Waste-Ed, the container was used for various projects.
“We have a project with the foundation and at the time there was around 500 eco-bricks inside the container as well as tools and education signage.
“Basically, someone took advantage of the container standing there.
“It was easy to take because the gate was open and it was very well organised crime because there were no names mentioned when we tried to find out who moved the container”
She added that CCTV footage helped them track the container and truck as well as the driver of the truck.
“We tracked the truck that was taken and the driver of the truck apparently received a container number with no proof of who the person was who wanted the container moved.”
The shipping container was later found in Delft on Tuesday 26 July.
“We found our container but by that time the eco-bricks were removed.
“A ton of waste was basically dumped somewhere.
“We have been to landfills in the area but we can’t find it. It is disappointing that it is out in the environment.
“We ask if anyone has any information on where it could have been dumped to let us know.”
- Ocean View police spokesperson Capt Nick Spreeth said a case of theft has been opened.
