Easter came a little early for residents at Kensington Home for the Aged when they were treated with some Easter eggs and hot cross buns thanks to a donation by Pick n Pay asap! and the Feed the Nation Foundation.

On Tuesday 26 March, excitement was evident on the faces of the seniors as a giant Easter bunny mascot put huge smiles on their faces. Each resident was then treated to a cup of tea and a hot cross bun.

Groceries and dignitary packs, consisting of toiletry items like toothpaste, roll-on, lotion, and face cloths among others, were also handed over.

The Feed the Nation Foundation, a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) that provides food assistance, also handed over a R5 000 grocery voucher.

Mona Angers, general manager at the home, said the donation was much-needed.

“We are overwhelmed and grateful for this kind gesture. This donation will reduce some expenses for us. It will be of great help to us. The residents benefit from it, they love treats and entertainment.”

It was a morning of fun and entertainment for the residents.

Angers explained that the toiletry donation would allow them to redirect resources where necessary. “We are often asked what we need for residents, and the answer is toiletries and sweet luxury treats. Some families default on payments, causing budgetary constraints. The products in the dignity bags will keep our storeroom stocked for three months.”

Angers explained that it was a welcoming treat as not all residents would get to be with their families over Easter.

“Some residents may go home, but the majority will stay in our care. They love it when people come in and make a difference. This brightened up their day. The spirits are high, and they love the fuss and the kindness.”

Resident Leonora Arendse (80) echoed Angers’ sentiments and added: “I can go on my knees and thank them that we are not forgotten. I don’t see my children often; this is so beautiful and unexpected. I want to thank them for the work that they do.”

Mary Brown (84) said the event brought back fond memories.

“This is so wonderful. Pick n Pay being here brought back pleasant memories. In my younger years, that used to be the place where we go shop. There was a time when my husband worked for the retailer. I appreciate this wonderful surprise.”

Leandre Venter, Pick n Pay ASAP marketing manager, said: “We came to deliver joy. During Easter, we forget the older people, we only focus on the kids. But we thought we wanted to bring some joy to the older folks who do so much for us.

“We want to give them a moment of joy to feel seen and supported and just to make them smile.”

Deirdre Mullins, national CSI manager for the retailer, shared a heartwarming message for the seniors and said: “We are sending all our love and blessings to you.”
