In the spirit of Ubuntu and in honour of Mandela Day, Octotel, the Western Capeโs leading fibre network operator reinforced its commitment to empowering vulnerable communities โ partnering with The Haven Night Shelter, ITAD Africa, and Blue Ribbon.
What began earlier this year as a professional CV writing workshop for social workers has grown into a multi-layered initiative aimed at restoring dignity, building skills, and expanding access to opportunities for South Africaโs homeless population.
Building hope where it counts
โOctotel was born right here in Cape Town, by Capetonians for Capetonians. We believe in supporting our own communities and connecting people where it counts. Every campaign and partnership we take onโฆ is about making a real, lasting impact. We donโt just deliver fibre; weโre building hope and opportunity. When thereโs a way to help our people, we step up and get involved,โ said Scott Cunningham, COO of Octotel, when he reflected on the companyโs purpose
In May 2025, Octotel facilitated a professional CV writing workshop with Haven Night Shelterโs social workers, equipping them to better prepare clients for the job market.
โThese are people trying to rebuild their lives,โ said Carly Haydricks, Octotel CSR team leader. โHelping the helpersโฆ would have a ripple effect that could transform lives long after the workshop.โ
Mandela Day 2025: Digital access and nutrition
For Mandela Day, Octotel focused on two pillars: digital access and nutritional support.
Through its partnership with ITAD Africa, the company donated seven fully operational computers, branded mouse pads, and essential peripherals โ transforming an unused space into a digital hub. ITAD Africa will maintain the equipment for sustainability.

โOur mission is to help homeless individuals reintegrate into societyโฆ Octotelโs assistance has been invaluable, especially at our Moira Henderson shelter, the only one with a computer lab. This space allows us to run digital courses, assist with CV writing, and help clients search for jobs. It is a lifeline for those without phones or internet access,โ said Shadrick Valayadum, CEO of The Haven Night Shelter.
Serving more than meals
Octotel staff also dedicated their 67 minutes to preparing and serving warm meals, with Blue Ribbon providing freshly baked rolls and essential supplies.
โBeing part of this initiativeโฆ is truly inspiring. Octotelโs donation of laptops and connectivity is brilliant โ while Blue Ribbon supports with feeding and essentials. This partnership ensures they are not only nourished but also upskilled and connected. Such a kind of collaborationโฆ creates lasting change,โ shared Alistair Laguma, regional community development specialist at Blue Ribbon
