CAPE TOWN-A group of local schools made their communities proud after sweeping several awards at the Metropole South Education District (MSED) Enrichment Awards.
This year Zwaanswyk Academy, Heathfield High School, Muizenberg Junior School, Lavender High School and Perivale Primary School staff were honoured for making significant strides in the fields of sport and arts and culture on Friday 24 October.
The awards are organised by the MSED, said Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Milicent Merton.

“Teachers in the Metro South Education District were acknowledged and awarded for their sterling contribution to inclusive education excellence across co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The objective of the evening was to recognise and promote excellence in sport, the arts, social cohesion and inclusive educational activities.”
That evening saw four Zwaanswyk Academy staff members (Jade Rodgers, (second place, Drama Director of the Year), Wendy-Lynn Petersen (second place, Music Teacher of the Year), Altheo Mathys (Outstanding Achievement in Sports and Recreation) and Fernal Hansen (Outstanding Achievement in Sports and Recreation) receive recognition for outstanding contributions to performing arts and sports programmes.
Heathfield High was named the runner-up Sports School of the Year. “The District Arts Revival Team (DART) recognises that teachers are often overwhelmed by the daily demands of curriculum delivery and administrative responsibilities,” Merton said.
“They also note that teacher recognition is usually limited to academic achievement, with little attention paid to co- and extra-curricular contributions from (teachers). Despite these challenges, many (teachers) continue to go beyond the call of duty to ensure that no child is left behind. These principals and teachers are true ambassadors of inclusivity, diversity, and equity.”
Nomination forms were sent out to schools in the district and 105 nominations were received with 130 candidates being nominated across 26 categories (some in teams), Merton added.
Lavender High School’s boys u-19 soccer team was runner-up school team of the year. Nicolene Langner from Perivale Primary runner-up female coach of the year.
Christaan Hougaard from Muizenberg Junior School also won the award for music teacher of the year.
