After relocating from Johannesburg three months ago to Claremont, Darian De Oliveira, a national Tag Rugby player and personal trainer, is making his mark in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs.

With a wealth of experience as an athlete and sports conditioning expert, De Oliveira brings his passion for fitness and community engagement to his new base in Claremont.

Having represented South Africa in Tag Rugby, or “TagBoks,” De Oliveira is no stranger to discipline and teamwork.

His journey began at a young age, participating in football, athletics, and swimming before discovering a love for fitness.

He later found his niche in Tag Rugby after being introduced to the sport at a gym in Johannesburg. “Fitness is about more than just the physical aspect. It’s about improving your overall quality of life and challenging yourself to grow in every way,” he says.

De Oliveira has embraced Cape Town’s active lifestyle, highlighting the freedom and opportunities the city offers.

He notes the stark contrast with Johannesburg, where safety concerns limit outdoor activities.

Wellness

In Cape Town, he has found a community that promotes wellness through activities like hiking, beach runs, and cycling.

Reflecting on his national representation, De Oliveira shares the pride he feels wearing the green and gold: “It’s an honour to represent my country, my city, and my community. It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly.”

One of his standout moments came in July during a match against Great Britain, where he scored an open-play try, sprinting to the line and celebrating with his teammates. This memory fuels his ambition to continue playing for the national team and strive for selection in the 2026 Tag Rugby World Cup in Australia.

In addition to his athletic goals, De Oliveira is building his personal training business in Claremont, emphasizing consistency, communication, and a supportive environment for clients. “My philosophy is simple: always show up, stay consistent, and never give up. Life is a journey, not a destination,” he says.

Looking ahead, De Oliveira is preparing for a Tag Rugby tournament at Green Point Football Club next month while also training with the Villager Rugby Club, aiming to secure a spot on their first team.

For De Oliveira, the journey is just as important as the destination. Whether inspiring his clients, mentoring aspiring athletes, or chasing his own dreams, he continues to embody the values of resilience, dedication, and community.
