A spirit of warmth and community filled the Muizenberg Civic Centre on Sunday, 20 July, as the Lions Club of TOn Sunday, 20 July, the Lions Club of Tokai hosted its annual Mandela Day event, Soups, Socks & Stories, at the Muizenberg Civic Centre. The heartfelt initiative aimed to nourish both the body and soul of Muizenberg’s homeless community.

This year’s event, described by organisers as the most inclusive yet, offered more than just soup and bread. Volunteers handed out socks, underwear, beanies, and handmade sleeping bags crafted from newspaper and plastic. More importantly, they delivered each item with dignity and personal care.

“We don’t just feed people. We take the time to hear their stories,” said Mark Rossouw, chair of the Lions Club of Tokai.
“That’s the heart of Soups, Socks & Stories. Everyone deserves to be seen and heard, no matter their circumstances.”

According to Rossouw, the initiative goes beyond charity. It’s about forming human connections.

“Many people on the streets feel invisible,” he added.
“Sitting with someone, sharing soup, and listening without judgment can mean the world.”

Extending the Impact

In addition to helping on the day, the Lions Club donated all leftover soup, bread, and sleeping bags to two organisations working closely with the homeless: the Kalk Bay Haven Night Shelter and U-Turn Homeless Ministries.

“Our collaboration with these partners is essential,” said Rossouw.
“Together, we work not only to provide aid but also to support long-term reintegration and dignity.”

Support from the City

The success of the event was also made possible thanks to Ward 64 councillor Izabel Sherry, who helped the Lions Club secure the venue.

“The Lions Club has shown what true community upliftment looks like,” said Sherry.
“They didn’t just hand out items they showed real care and took time to listen to people’s stories.”

Acts of Kindness Matter

Throughout the day, volunteers sat side by side with guests, sharing warm bowls of soup and meaningful conversations. The atmosphere inside the Civic Centre was filled with mutual respect, compassion, and humanity.

As Cape Town’s winter sets in, Soups, Socks & Stories reminds us that even small acts of empathy can spark change.

“We can’t change someone’s whole world in one day,” Rossouw said.
“But we can make one day feel as if the world has changed.”
