In the heart of Pinelands, a group of vibrant and determined women is redefining aging with grace and vitality, on a mission to promote wellness, unity, and the spirit of ubuntu.

They call themselves the Soccer Grannies.

On Sunday 17 November, this dynamic group launched their initiative at the Thornton Sports Club, hosting an event filled with joy, community spirit and inspiration.

Comprising women aged 50 and above, the Soccer Grannies aim to prove that age is just a number when it comes to health, fitness, and camaraderie.

“This is more than soccer,” said key figure Marietta Hopley. “It’s about building friendships, staying active and showing the world that senior women are unstoppable.”

The launch event featured a lineup of guests.

Deputy Minister of Social Development Ganief Hendricks delivered a heartfelt keynote address, praising the Soccer Grannies for their innovative programme. “This initiative is a shining example of community-driven empowerment and wellness,” he said, urging communities across the country to replicate such efforts.

Adding a touch of sporting history to the occasion was former Orlando Pirates soccer star Gora Ebrahim. His words of encouragement resonated with the group as he declared: “The beautiful game belongs to everyone. You are breaking barriers and showing younger generations what determination looks like.”

Best of community

Ward 53 councillor Riad Davids also voiced his support, committing to securing facilities for the grannies to train and gather. “The Soccer Grannies represent the best of our community,” Davids said.

The Pinelands Soccer Grannies extend an open invitation to all women aged 50 and above to join their movement.

Whether single, divorced, widowed or married seasoned soccer players or complete beginners all are welcome.

“This is about breaking barriers and creating a safe, supportive space for women to thrive,” Hopley explained.

With plans to compete in local tournaments, host community events, and advocate for healthy living, the Soccer Grannies are more than a team, they’re a movement. They aim to demonstrate that senior women can chase dreams, overcome challenges, and inspire others.

As they continue their journey, the Soccer Grannies invite the community to cheer them on, participate in practises, or simply share in their infectious energy.

Hopley captured the spirit of the group, saying “it’s never just about the game. It’s about the life we live and the legacy we leave”.
