  • This year’s success is a testament to resilience and the power of accessible education for all ages.

In a celebration of resilience and determination, Communicare’s Vulamathuba initiative in Pinelands recently honoured its adult learners from the class of 2023-’24 for their outstanding matric results. Out of 45 learners who sat for exams, 65% achieved their matric certificates, with 27% securing a Bachelor’s Pass, 31% a Diploma Pass, and 7% a Higher Certificate Pass.

Vulamathuba, the social and community development branch of Communicare, focuses on transforming lives by offering socio-economic support to communities. “Our mission with Vulamathuba is clear,” says Zandile Mamputa, the spokesperson for the programme. “We’re here to promote economic mobility, foster social cohesion, and support our vulnerable tenants, so everyone has the chance to succeed.”

The Vulamathuba Matric Programme is specifically designed to provide educational opportunities for adult learners, whether they’re completing matric for the first time or looking to improve their marks. The programme primarily focuses on the Senior Certificate, with exams scheduled for May/June. They also accept individuals upgrading their National Senior Certificate results.

Classes for this group began in July 2023, preparing them for the May/June exams the following year. For many learners, this milestone represents a second chance, opening doors to higher education and new career paths.

“It’s not just about the certificate,” Mamputa explained. “It’s about building confidence, creating opportunities and giving individuals the tools they need to reshape their futures.”

No age limit

Mpumelelo Mnisi, 32, from District Six, a standout learner, not only achieved 91% in History but also discovered her full potential through Vulamathuba. “I wasn’t sure if I could still succeed academically at 32, but Vulamathuba has helped me realise that education has no age limit. Balancing work and studies is challenging, but it was worth every moment. Now, I’m unstoppable and ready to pursue a career in Human Resource Management or Public Relations Management,” she says.

The programme’s impact extends beyond academics, aiming to enhance the self-reliance and economic stability of participants. Through partnerships with various organisations, Vulamathuba has built a network that not only supports tenants but also positively impacts surrounding communities. These initiatives create pathways for tenants to engage more actively within their communities, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Mamputa expressed her pride in this year’s achievements. “These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our learners. Many of them have faced unique challenges as adult learners, balancing responsibilities while pursuing their education. Their success speaks to the resilience within our communities and the importance of offering accessible education for all.”

As the Vulamathuba Matric Programme continues to grow, so does its impact. With consistent support, this initiative is helping build stronger, more resilient communities across the region. Mamputa concluded: “This year’s results are a reminder that it’s never too late to learn. Education remains a powerful tool for positive change, and Vulamathuba is committed to ensuring that every adult learner has the opportunity to realise their full potential.”
