A former Seawinds resident has played her part in uplifting her community by sponsoring a toiletry-donation drive for 235 learners at both Hillwood and Ithemba primary schools on Tuesday 13 May.
Linda Cevula, who hails from Overcome Heights, decided to celebrate her birthday by distributing toiletry gift bags and snacks for the community that raised her.
“This year I decided to celebrate my birthday in a special way. I started a small toiletry donation drive to motivate Grade 7 learners and remind them that anything is possible in life. I wanted to show them that coming from a poor background needn’t define one’s future.”
Cevula launched the donation drive on a WhatsApp group she created to raise funds.

“I managed to collect enough toiletries and snacks to gift 235 learners from two schools. To see the gratitude on the students’ faces was the best gift I could have asked for.”
She also runs her own non-profit organisation, Next Gen Educators and Sports (NES), which aims to empower youth by providing hands-on training in education and sports management.
Cevula hoped her donation drive would inspire the community to start kickstarting their own initiatives.
“Through hard work and education one can change one’s own situation. It’s like saying, ‘I’m not where I want to be, yet I am in a much better space than before.’ I want to give them hope and encourage them to be kind to one another, and I want them to pass on that compassion for one another.”
