Scouts give back to the homeless

The First Muizenberg Sea Scout Group hosted a soup kitchen for the homeless, in collaboration with the Retreat Cub pack, as part of their Mandela Day service initiative.


The First Muizenberg Sea Scout Group hosted a soup kitchen for the homeless, in collaboration with the Retreat Cub pack, as part of their Mandela Day service initiative.

Pack scouter Lisa Storey said a group of 20 Cubs spent the morning of Saturday 23 July making 40F of potato soup and eight loaves of cheese bread.

“The Cubs learned about healthy eating and why fruit and vegetables are good for you. They chopped up all the vegetables for the soup and the assistant pack scouter Samantha Rouse assisted them.

“The Cubs then prepared the bread dough and added lots of cheese, guided by assistant Pack Scouter Jason Suter. Some of the bread mixtures had a little too much milk added, but they all turned out to be delicious once baked.”

While the soup was cooking, the Cubs played some games as well as a memory game using their sense of taste.

A generous donation of food ingredients was received by Sustainable.co.za – an online eco-store based in Westlake – co-owned by scout group leader Angela Lee-Wright.

“Everyone had a delicious lunch and then a small group of 1st Muizenberg Scouters, one cub and two scouts took the remaining 30F of soup and four loaves of bread to Muizenberg Park.

“We served about 40 people in less than two hours and it was an incredibly humbling experience to meet them all, hear their stories and to see how hard life is for them, especially in this bitterly cold weather.”

She added that most of the people they met lived under the Muizenberg bridge, in Muizenberg Park or in the mountains above the park.

“They were all so friendly and happy to see us and so very grateful for the wonderful warm meal.”

The 1st Muizenberg Sea Scouts, which is based in Zandvlei, caters for age groups from five up to 17.
