After reading about the Thusanang Community Development’s work in People’s Post, officials at Trevors Kyokushin School of Karate decided to donate food ingredients to the non-profit organisation (NPO).

On Monday 22 August, parents and karate students handed over the donations collected to Beatrice Leng, founder of the organisation.

The karate school is based at the Stephan Reagan Hall in Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain.

Founder and sensei Trevor Rustin says they managed to fill several tables using the R5 000 generously donated by parents over two days. The donation drive provided the organisation with enough food items to last around three weeks.

“In the world of karate, we can be strong for a little while but good forever,” he says.

“To have our students be part of the ‘giving back’ initiative and by allowing them to participate, we have etched into their memories the act of giving and caring.

“This will open their eyes to see how blessed they are in the first instance and get them to appreciate what they have and also the realisation that many children their age are not as fortunate,” he says.

The items were purchased in accordance with a needs list provided by Leng.

“We received the shopping list from the beneficiary. It was from meat to sugar, to maize meal, tin foods, noodles, and so on,” says Rustin.

The karate school caters to students between the ages of five and 60. “Anybody is welcome to join the club,” he says.

Rustin hopes this will create a lifelong memory for the students as they achieve successes in their lives.
