A partnership aimed at making women feel safer while exercising in a public space was successfully rolled out at the Philisa Abafazi Bethu Womens’ Centre in Steenberg on Saturday 25 November.

The centre, a gender-based violence (GBV) organisation based in Steenberg, partnered with Bolt to create an outdoor exercise gym where women and the elderly could exercise comfortably.

The outdoor gym is equipped with easy-to-use fitness equipment, providing women with an accessible place to improve their physical well-being.

Lucinda Evans, founder of the organisation, says residents will have a safe space to live a healthy lifestyle.

“We are most grateful that the business sector and, in particular, the ride-hailing transport service Bolt share the same sentiments and align with our vision for the need for this safe space where the most vulnerable in our communities can freely participate in a healthier lifestyle.

“We invite other private sector businesses to support GBV programmes like ours.”

According to the latest statistics released by the South African Police Service, GBV cases have reached an alarming level. It is reported that between July and September last year, over 13 000 women were victims of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, while 1 277 women were victims of attempted murder, and 989 women were murdered during this reporting period.

Takura Malaba, Bolt Regional Manager, East and Southern Africa, said the alarming stats represent the lives of women affected by GBV.

“As responsible corporate citizens, we must take a stand and actively work towards making the world a better place for women by providing them with safe spaces to do simple tasks like exercising.

“We firmly believe that working together can make a tangible difference in the fight against GBV. Together, let us create a society where everyone, especially women, can live free from the fear of violence and harassment.”
