Keen cyclists Kevin Foster and Roland Postma introduced Rondebosch kids to the BikeBus initiative on Friday 20 October by inviting primary school learners to cycle to school on a route with fellow walkers or rollerbladers escorted by adults for their safe passage.

An initiative spearheaded by Active Mobility Forum (AMF), the BikeBus Programme is a community-driven campaign to secure a safer Cape Town by creating safer, more accessible streets for children and the community.

“By signing up, you’re choosing to stand with us in promoting cycling and walking as not only a healthy and eco-friendly means of transport but also a joyous way to build and strengthen our community bonds,” says organiser Foster.

According to its website, AMF is a programme centred on the promotion of active mobility in Cape Town, Johannesburg and beyond. Active mobility can be defined as a transport based around human physical activity, such as cycling and walking. Their main aim is to bring all the diverse voices around active mobility under one banner, to address issues like climate change and support healthy lifestyles that improve mental and physical health while simultaneously working as a catalyst for the economy.

Starting on the corner of Durban Road and Liesbeek Parkway, the BikeBus covered St Joseph’s Marist College, Bishops Prep and Pre-Prep and Rondebosch Boys Prep.

The BikeBus Programme’s mission is to ultimately make the City safer and more child-friendly by promoting walking and cycling to school.

“Our ultimate goal is to create ‘people-first’ streets, ensuring safety for all. With your support, we hope to initiate regular bike buses in our first pilot area and expand this initiative across Cape Town,” Foster continued.

This includes Pedal for a Cause, promoting:

1. Safety: Advocate for safer commuting paths for our children.

2. Environment: Promote greener and more sustainable transportation.

3. Community: Strengthen community bonds and encourage healthy living.

Why join the BikeBus?

“Cycling is for everyone, regardless of age or skill level. By participating in this event, we not only raise awareness about safe cycling but also demonstrate it as an effective mode of transport. Your presence and support will contribute to a healthier, safer, and environmentally friendly future for our children.”
