Nearly 900 eager runners and walkers embarked on a unique journey, on Saturday 2 December, embracing the spirit of “Celebrating 60 years of Sobukwe and Mandela.”
The occasion was none other than the Robben Island Museum (RIM) Memorial Run, a remarkable event brought to life by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in collaboration with Technical Sponsor, Skechers.
The runners, fuelled by enthusiasm and a sense of history, took a ferry ride to Robben Island, transforming the event into a one-of-a-kind experience.
Kenneth Makatees, Western Cape Regional Manager for SABC, expressed his admiration, stating: “The Robben Island Museum Memorial Run was an extraordinary event that fits in well with the SABC mandate which is to inform, educate and entertain.”
The run, broadcast live on SABC, captured the attention of viewers, with many expressing their intention to return for the event in the coming years.
Makatees shared the sentiment, highlighting the commitment of SABC to make this an annual celebration and explore further initiatives with the Robben Island Museum.
The event aimed not only to promote fitness but also to raise awareness about the rich history of Robben Island.
“As the nation approaches its 30th year as a democratic South Africa, the run served as a poignant reminder of the challenging path to democracy.”
Abigail Thulare, CEO of Robben Island Museum, expressed her satisfaction with the event, saying: “We are highly pleased with not only the turn-out for this historical RIM Memorial Run but also the overall experience that visitors had of the beauty and intrigue of the landscape.”
The journey to Robben Island was a spectacle in itself, requiring five ferry trips to transport all participants. The staggered starts added a dynamic element to the event.
For many, it was their first visit to the island, and the sense of excitement was palpable as they disembarked, acknowledging that this run was in honour of Robert Sobukwe and Nelson Mandela.
Efforts were made to minimise waste on the route, with participants receiving water bottles tagged with a promise – “Keep bottle and redeem for a medal and snack pack at the finish.” This not only reduced litter but also ensured the preservation of this World Heritage Site’s pristine condition.
The finish line greeted participants with more than just a sense of accomplishment. Each finisher received a medal, a Coke, a snack pack, a muffin, a Wimpy warm beverage, and a Milky Lane ice cream.
The event didn’t conclude at the finish line.
Participants were invited to explore the Maximum Security Prison, where Nelson Mandela was once incarcerated and the Robert Sobukwe Complex.
In reflecting on the event’s success, the organisers expressed gratitude to all partners, sponsors, and entrants who contributed to “Celebrating 60 years of Sobukwe and Mandela.”
