Dozens of residents went to the Zonnebloem School hall on Wednesday 15 May for the Walmer Estate Civic Association’s annual general meeting (AGM).

This was the first AGM since 2019 and saw a new executive elected.

Zaahir Davids was elected as the new chair, Loreen Rodemeyer deputy chair, Caroline Michie as secretary, Johnathan Joshua will perform the role of treasurer, Rishqa Brown, planner and Deena Bosch will oversee heritage-related matters. An additional member is Justin Grootman.

Commenting on his election, Davids said he looks forward to working with his team and the community.

“It’s a daunting task but luckily, I have good support from the rest of the members. It will be a community effort. As a team, we will pull together. My vision is to make the area safer and better for everyone.”

He explained that the new executive will organise a sit-down soon to discuss plans and issues that require urgent attention.

Davids added that clean-up operations and the revitalisation of community spaces are some of their focus areas.

“We are looking to revitalise the park in Chester Road. A lot of kids from Holy Cross and Zonnebloem use that park and it is in tatters. Even the gravel area needs attention.

“We need to organise a community gathering or market day in that space to get some engagement and get people to see what needs to be done.”

Concern

He explained that people living on the street and erecting illegal dwellings are concerns in the area.

“We want to get those people into shelters and back on their feet. It’s sad to see people in shacks and living like that.

“The sad factor is that you have bad elements living among them. Some people are living in shacks because they don’t have any other means.”

According to Davids, crime incidents are also increasing.

“We have had a few incidents in the area where people were stabbed and robbed. There are a lot of robberies in Hanover Street.”

Yusuf Mohamed, Ward 57 councillor, attended the AGM. He said community-based organisations play a pivotal role.

“Community-based organisations are vital. Many of the successes we’ve seen in the ward have been championed by these types of organisations. I’m very happy Walmer Estate has a voice once again.”

Mohamed said he is looking forward to working with the new executive.

“I am exceptionally happy that the committee was able to hold such a successful AGM. Walmer Estate has so much potential and I’m ready to unlock it with this vibrant new team.”
