Kensington residents made full use of the opportunity to access municipal services as various City of Cape Town departments visited the community on Wednesday 18 June.

Several officials from various departments, accompanied by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, visited Kensington Civic Centre to offer crucial services to residents.

Among others, residents had access to the Department of Home Affairs, Social Development Department, Safety and Security, Health and Wellness, emergency services, business hub and Jobs Connect .

“We get all City departments into a Ward for a whole day, and they do everything. Helping people with their concerns and queries. What I love about this is that you get every resident with all kinds of queries and issues and we can help them all,” said Hill-Lewis

Cheslyn Steenberg, Ward 56 councillor, said: “This is an opportunity for residents to engage with the mayor and with Mayco members, and officials on the ground to hear what the issues are and how we can resolve it.”

Resident Esme Theys welcomed the mobile office and said this saves her on travelling costs.

“I would have to travel to get to these services. I am here for my rates rebate and to apply for an ID smart card.”

Another resident Garlia Booysen believes this is a convenient offering.

“They should do it more often, then we don’t have to travel all the way to the CBD and wait in long queues for the entire day. I need to apply for a new ID and consult with Sassa.”

Clive Shepard, a resident in the 18th Avenue informal settlement, sought assistance from the City’s Human Settlements Department.

“My partner and I have been living in in car for the past few months. I also need to apply for Sassa grant. So I am happy that all these services are here close to us.”

Rozetta Harvey applied for a new compost bin and received one on the day. She will now focus on maintaining her garden.

For resident Anita Kleinbooi having the mobile office in the neighbourhood meant she could address her concerns directly with the mayor.

“This is a good thing. I think they should make it on a Saturday so that more residents can attend. I spoke to officials from every department present here and I was able to ask questions and complain about issues.”
