In a momentous occasion for the University of Cape Town (UCT), Prof Mosa Moshabela was officially installed as the institution’s 11th Vice-Chancellor (VC) on Monday 25 November.

The ceremony, held at the Historic Sarah Baartman Hall, was a celebration of resilience, excellence, and visionary leadership, attended by academics, government officials, alumni and students.

Moshabela’s inspiring journey began in Limpopo, where as a young man, he aspired to study medicine at UCT but faced rejection 20 years ago. Undeterred, he pursued his dream at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), eventually qualifying as a medical doctor and carving a distinguished career in public health. “Twenty years ago, I was a young man with a dream. Today, I stand here humbled, grateful, and ready to serve,” he said, reflecting on his journey.

His story is a testament to perseverance and the pursuit of a higher purpose. “I encourage you to dream, thrive and aspire,” he told attendees. “One day, we will also honour you. This duty is not one I take lightly. I will not promise what I cannot deliver, but I am deeply humbled and committed to this responsibility.”

During his inaugural address, Moshabela outlined his vision for UCT, centred on inclusivity, academic excellence, and societal transformation.

“UCT is a beacon of knowledge and hope. My mission is to honour its legacy while forging new pathways for future generations in an ever-evolving world,” he shared.

Celebrated academic

As a Professor of Public Health, Moshabela brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at UKZN.

He has been celebrated for his contributions to public health, including improving access to healthcare in underserved communities and advancing research on HIV and TB. His accolades include the PHILA Annual Award from the Public Health Association of South Africa and a Ministerial Special Covid-19 Award for his science communication efforts.

The installation ceremony highlighted the personal and professional journey that brought him to this milestone. “I come from a family of strong women who have shaped my life profoundly,” he shared. Cultural performances and speeches from university stakeholders underscored the optimism surrounding his appointment.

Chancellor of UCT, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, said: “Moshabela’s rise from a hopeful student to the leader is a story of unwavering belief in one’s dreams. It signals a promising era for UCT, driven by a leader who has consistently demonstrated visionary leadership and a dedication to advancing higher education and societal development, we are proud of you”.

As UCT welcomes this new chapter, the university community and beyond look forward to the transformative impact of Moshabela’s tenure.
