The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) 2023 matric results were released on Thursday (18 January), and Reddam House Constantia boasted a whopping 24 shooting-star matriculants who achieved four or more distinctions.
The top learner, Joseph Carmody, achieved a national ranking within the top 5% in six or more subjects, placing him on the IEB’s Outstanding Achievement List. He achieved nine distinctions, his highest mark for maths a stupendous 99%.
Another two Reddam Constantia students, Donna Schmidt and Stilla O’Reilly, achieved eight distinctions. According to Donna this result certainly takes a lot of build-up of disciplined school years to achieve such a result.
“The earlier the better to master a good routine and maintain good standards, not just from Grade 10,” she said. “I definitely was hard on myself, pushing myself more than I would like… but I did sport and had a balanced school life. In preparing for exams enough was never enough!”
Stilla, on the other hand, admitted to failing at keeping a balance. “I just totally and completely threw myself into my academics, projects and exams. I didn’t have capacity for much else, but I let loose a little bit now, though.”
Another student, Adam Allie, celebrated seven distinctions, and told People’s Post the first thing he did on receiving his results was “go to sleep!”
“But as for my university journey I’m really excited to be enrolled at the University of Cape Town (UCT), for a Bachelor of Business Science degree specialising in Actuarial Sciences, because I would love to enter that field.”
Adam urged this year’s matrics simply to “trust yourself. Don’t even start comparing yourself to others’ standards. Be proud of your efforts and not those of others.” Adam added whenever he experienced a slump in motivation, as a Muslim, he simply turned to his religion. “I find a lot of comfort in my religion and it really helped with motivation in all my exams.”
A further 10 Reddam Constantia students achieved six distinctions (Ella Spinks, Tatiana Beyers, Liliana de Sousa, Karla Blom, Grant McLeroth, Rachel Wood, Sachin Eaves, Kate Everdij, Sacha Welch and Rebecca Pottas).
Overall, the school boasts a 96% bachelor pass rate and 2,94 distinctions per student. Reddam House Constantia was the best-performing school in mathematics across the Inspired Education Group in South Africa.
The highlights of the Class of 2023 students at Reddam House schools in the Western Cape are:
- 120 students across the three schools received 308 distinctions, an average of 2,57 distinctions per student.An average percentage of 72,39% across the three schools.
- 39 students across the three schools achieved four or more distinctions.
