  • The Kensington and Factreton CPF held its annual general meeting on 26 November, electing a new executive team with Jameelah Liedeman re-elected as chairperson.
  • Liedeman aims to unify community organisations, improve the public image of local police, and strengthen relationships with neighbouring precincts.
  • Residents are encouraged to attend meetings, participate in awareness programmes, and contribute ideas to help restore the community’s former glory.

As the year draws to an end the Kensington and Factreton Community Policing Forum (CPF) held its annual general meeting on Tuesday 26 November at the PPK Hall in Factreton, where a new executive was elected.

About 13 of the 16 registered community organisations were present. The elections were done under the guidance of a representative of the Department of Policing Oversight and chair of the sub district City of Cape Town CPF. Residents were also present.

Jameelah Liedeman was re-elected CPF chair, while Godfrey Bartlett will be deputy chair. Mogamad Adlie Gabier was elected secretary and Magdalene Bonaparte treasurer.

Amanda Williams is the public-relations officer and the position of projects coordinator will be filled by Rukeya Jacobs.

Additional members are Sulayga Bardien, Esther Julius and Patricia George.

The position of deputy secretary will be selected and announced by the Kensington Police Station commander soon.

On her re-election Liedeman said: “At first I was against standing for re-election, but after many prayers and listening to the various voices within the Kensington and Factreton community, it was clear I can make a difference and be the voice for the voiceless, because clearly this is what the Almighty wants.”

During her term she wants community structures to work more closely together.

“One of the things I want to achieve is to bring as many community organisations to the table so we can work together to create a better Kensington and Factreton. For too long the smaller groups are working in silos and duplicating one another’s work.

“I also want to build a better image of Kensington police in the community and hopefully build better relationships with the three other precincts we share a common border with — Goodwood, Pinelands and Maitland.”

Liedeman expressed her gratitude to the previous executive for their commitment to bringing change in the community.“I want to thank the previous executive members who served alongside me over the past two years for their dedication and willingness to make a difference. I know we will continue to have their support and I appreciate each of them.”She appealed to residents to work with the CPF to ensure safety in the area.

“Community members can support us by attending our quarterly meetings, joining our various awareness programmes we have during the year and lastly, bringing their suggestions on how we can all work together to bring our community back to its former glory.”
