Ottomans Cricket Club all-rounder Abdul-Galeem Rylands (22) from Grassy Park appeals for a dismissal in their match against Pinelands on Saturday 5 February. Rylands would go on to secure bowling figures of 6/20 to help Ottomans record a 71-run win over the home side. The race for honours in the Western Province Cricket Association Premier League competition is hotting up with both Western Province Cricket Club and Durbanville having scored their second successive victory.

Durbanville had little difficulty in beating Cape Town Cricket Club (CTCC) by 103 runs at home. Batting first, Durbanville compiled 222/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Ruben Senekal, the Durbies middle-order batsman, stabilised the innings with a top score of 66 runs, while veteran seamer Brendan Young (3/43) was the pick of the CTCC bowling attack.

In reply, the visitors were saved from a rout by an undefeated knock (45*) by Clint Botha as the rest of the batsmen floundered against the off-spin of long-serving Robbie van der Ross (3/42) as they could only muster 119 all out in 34 overs.

Home side Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) were also in the rampant mood with an eight-wicket win over Claremont. Set to score 147 for victory, WPCC’s top-order batsmen Derek Michell (64) and Junaid Allie (63*), with a second wicket stand of 142 runs, paved the way for their comfortable win.

Earlier, Claremont struggled as they were bowled out for 146 runs.

Their batsmen struggled against the combined spin of Kyle Schreuder (3/19) and the pace of Kyle Klein (3/25) as they were dismissed in 45 overs.

In the First Division A, front-runners in the competition Ottomans for once had their bowlers to thank for their easy 71-run win over home side Pinelands.

This time it was the promising all-rounder Abdul-Galeem Rylands (22) from Grassy Park who returned his best figures of 6/20 that caused havoc among the opposition batsmen as they struggled to 81/9 in their allotted overs. This was in reply to Ottomans’ total of 152, with Taahier Samaai (33) top-scoring. The result means Ottomans are now on a seven-match winning streak and will next face Milnerton Cricket Club on Saturday 12 February.

Second-placed Primrose surprisingly came unstuck against home side Glamorgan. The latter, chasing 223 for victory, secured a three-wicket with four balls remaining.

The win was set up by opening batter Franco Kasner (61) and a useful half century by all-rounder Malcolm Cloete (51*).

Tygerberg amassed the highest score of the day (292/7) in their convincing 146-run win over Strandfontein.

Opening batsman Crescendo Makasella (88) was instrumental in setting up Tygers’ match-winning score.
